Arburg: successful appearance at the Fakuma 2011

11/17/2011

• The highlight of the "50 years of ALLROUNDER" anniversary and associated competition
• Presentation of the Edrive electric injection moulding machine series
• Focus on energy & production efficiency

This year's appearance at the Fakuma international plastics trade fair in Friedrichshafen was a complete success for Arburg, even exceeding high expectations. In addition to celebrating the "50 years of Allrounder" anniversary and presenting the new Edrive injection moulding machine series, the Lossburg-based machine manufacturer also focused on the multi-faceted subject of energy and production efficiency.

Traditionally, Arburg is not just the biggest exhibitor in Friedrichshafen, but is also regarded a co-founder of the Fakuma, which was established 30 years ago by exhibition organisers P.E. Schall. The international plastics trade fair still enjoys a high profile and is the most important event in this year's European exhibition calendar for Arburg. Expectations were correspondingly high and were actually exceeded. The stand was very busy from the first day of the fair. International visitors did not just come to find out about Arburg injection moulding technology. But rather, they were much more interested in discussing specific projects with the experts and getting these under way. Furthermore, there were also opportunities to establish contacts with new cooperative partners.

Numerous entries for the anniversary competition
In addition to the innovative injection moulding technology on view, the "50 years of Allrounder" anniversary exhibition was also a great attraction. Within this framework, a special anniversary competition was held. Even the competition organisers at Arburg were surprised by the number of entries, particularly as the rules for entry were very strict: they were looking for the oldest Allrounder injection moulding machine still owned by its original purchaser and still operating in production today. The prize is a new Allrounder 370 E machine.

A total of 22 Arburg machines at the trade fair

The Lossburg-based machine manufacturer once again had an eye-catching presence, with a two-storey exhibition stand with about 1,300 m². Moreover, a large number of Allrounder injection moulding machines were also to be found at other locations throughout the Fakuma: In addition to the twelve exhibits on the Arburg stand, there were ten more machines on external stands. An impressive demonstration was provided of the performance and broad range of applications offered by Arburg machines and production cells, with the production of a wide variety of plastic products. On view were applications from the areas of multi-component technology, LSR processing, medical technology, optics, powder injection moulding and the production of sophisticated hybrid components, automotive products and packaging.

Exhibits demonstrate potential for increasing efficiency

All of the Fakuma exhibits reflected the company maxim "Arburg for efficient injection moulding". A variety of solutions and approaches for increasing efficiency in moulded part production, thereby helping to reduce unit costs, was shown. On the machine side, the focus was on the new Edrive series, which supplements the range of electric machines and is designed for standard applications. An Allrounder 570 E was used to present the Mold'n Seal process in which a six-axis robotic system is used to combine injection moulding and foaming.

The electric Alldrive and the hybrid Hidrive series offer efficiency in the high-performance sector and were represented by three exhibits. One example of this was the IML application on an Allrounder 720 H, which was used to produce two buckets, including their handles, in a cycle time of 4.8 seconds.

Other automation solutions presented were integrated inline colour measurement with thermochromics for quality assurance and the production of a two-component part made from LSR and PBT, including optical inspection, inline packaging and labelling. In contrast to this, a workstation based on a vertical Allrounder was also presented. This exhibit showed how the optimum integration of manual process steps in the production process can be used to implement efficient small series production.

The fact that hydraulic machines can also operate in a very energy-efficient manner was demonstrated by an Allrounder 520 S advance with the Arburg AES energy-saving system. To ensure that the actual energy requirement is always in focus, various exhibits were equipped with the Selogica "Energy Measurement" function.

The presentation of the Selogica "Set-up Assistant" module and the Arburg ALS host computer system showed how the optimisation of work processes or production planning and monitoring can be used to increase efficiency. New "mould removal" and "entry of specific material parameters" functions have been added to the set-up assistant to further reduce re-tooling times. As part of the ALS demonstration, the new "ALS Mobile" analysis tool was shown, enabling key figures and production data to be called up via smartphone, so that malfunctions and influences can be detected externally.

Enormous interest in energy & production efficiency

The theme of energy and production efficiency was not just a much-discussed topic at the stand, but also at the special show in the East Foyer, initiated by exhibition organisers P.E. Schall and hosted jointly by Arburg and material manufacturer BASF. There was a lot of interest in the idea of offering visitors a holistic view of the various areas and influential factors in order to increase their awareness of energy and production efficiency. Accordingly, the Fakuma 2011 was an all-round success for Arburg
