Jenoptik: Unique method for producing individual catalyst materials

5/14/2015

The catalysts, currently available on the market, are mainly standard products based on noble materials, which cannot or only to a very limited extent be adapted to the users' particular requirements. Furthermore, noble metal catalysts have only a small thermal stability (less than 650 ºC) and are not resistant against a great number of contaminants, such as sulfur.

In close cooperation with the Institute for Technical and Environmental Chemistry of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Jenoptik has succeeded in developing a high-speed synthesis method for producing individual catalyst materials, based on mixed metal oxides. During this type of synthesis, a spray of defined starting materials is heated in a short time up to 800 º to 1000 ºC and cooled abruptly again. As a result nanoparticles with energetically suboptimal atomic structures are formed. Those structures feature defects that contaminants or other substances may link up to for transformation during synthesis processes. The high process speed leads to an especially large number of defects in the nanoparticles making them an especially effective catalyst material. The characteristics of these highly functionalized particles, such as their size, surface area and conductivity can be easily adjusted within a wide range by changing the process parameters of the high-speed synthesis, and in this way the individual customer requirements can be easily met.

Because of the nano scale, the newly developed mixed metal oxide catalyst materials offer large specific surfaces and react very well to all kinds of volatile organic compounds (VOC).

"The combination of the raw materials used in the process and the specially developed high-speed synthesis method enables us to produce a wide range of tailor-made catalyst materials for our customers", says Peter Lischewski, General Manager of JENOPTIK KATASORB GmbH and Vice President Finance of Jenoptik's Lasers & Material Processing division. "Compared to conventional noble metals, our mixed metal oxides are characterized especially by a higher thermal stability (up to 1000 ºC) and high resistance to catalyst poisons." The high catalytic activity and the customer-specific adaptation of the Jenoptik catalysts and systems allow stable conversion rates while significantly reducing reaction temperatures (up to 200 K). Longer lifespan and increased energy efficiency thus lead to significantly lower operating costs.

Jenoptik specializes in developing and manufacturing state-of-the-art exhaust air purification systems and offers not only customized mixed metal oxide catalysts, but also high-performance systems for purifying the exhaust air of industrial plants that can be adapted to customer-specific processes. The holistic and sophisticated solutions for the decomposition of noxious dusts, aerosols, and gases through filtering, adsorption, and catalytic processes ensure efficient and economical exhaust air purification.

More information about Jenoptik products and solutions for exhaust air purification are available in booth C11, hall 9.2 of this year's ACHEMA industry trade fair in Frankfurt am Main.
