Launch of permanent antistatic and lubricant systems for plastics extends the recently introduced MEVOPUR® ISO/USP additive range
ISO10993 / USP pre-evaluated materials support the industry in establishing a clear extractable profile and simulation of potential leachables
Muttenz, February 9, 2012 - New possibilities to achieve cutting-edge permanent antistatic functionality for medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging take center stage among Clariant's innovations inspiring improvements in manufacturing process, product function and design appeal on-show at Medtec Europe 2012.
On-going extensions to Clariant's portfolio of Consistent, Controlled, Compliant MEVOPUR® additives and color masterbatches and compounds for the medical and pharmaceutical sectors, give brand-owners and device and packaging manufacturers new confidence in achieving greater cost-efficiency and differentiation for their products while helping to minimizing risk.
Clariant's launch of a permanent anti-static performance additive extends its recently-introduced additive range featuring ISO10993 / USP23 part 87, 88 Class VI biologically evaluated raw materials. The range provides step-change functionality in such areas as antimicrobial additives, surface lubrication, which may make extra surface coatings unnecessary. Examples of increased functionality include:
Lower surface friction: permanent and immediate lowering of friction between parts reduces force to rotate, slide and actuate may help to improve the functionality of metered dose devices, such as insulin pens. Further examples include reduction of insertion resistance for catheters or elimination of oils in syringe components. The additive offers an effective alternative to fluorine chemistries. The lower melt viscosity of the additive masterbatch improves mold release and helps avoiding mold deposits in the final product.
Additives focused on improving processing and costs are also included within the range, such as nucleants and process aids for faster cycle times and thinner walled products, laser marking for ink-free identification without solvent residues, and stabilizers to protect plastics materials from yellowing and loss of physical properties during gamma sterilization.
Highlights driving color and design creativity at Medtec 2012 include Clariant's Cyclic Olefin Copolymer (COC) color range delivering glass replacement potential for pharmaceutical packaging and devices based on COC polymers such as TOPAS® from Topas Advanced Polymers GmbH.
This expands Clariant's ISO10993 / USP Part 87 and 88 pre-evaluated standard color range which offers vibrant colors for extra shelf-appeal and differentiation for such polymers as specialty polyether block amide (PEBA) and more widely used polyethylene and polypropylene materials.
"We are continually developing our range of MEVOPUR additives and color masterbatches and compounds, to offer the medical and pharmaceutical packaging sectors dedicated solutions that will enable them to be creative in their product performance and processing ambitions while offering the consistency, control and compliance required for their highly-sensitive applications," comments Steve Duckworth, Head of Global Segment Medical & Pharmaceutical, Clariant.
MEVOPUR products are produced at Clariant's three ISO 13485:2003 accredited dedicated centers of competence for medical and pharmaceutical applications in the United States, Asia and Europe, supporting international production, and offering back-up supply under a single umbrella. |
