• Unique Low Emissions (LE) Technology helps Chinese green sand casting industry make significant emissions cuts
• Clariant's LE Technologies allow foundries to reduce harmful BTEX emissions by up to 80%, while still achieving excellent quality and productivity
• Foundry additives GEKO® LE and ECOSIL® LE prevent emission generation from the outset, supporting a greener foundry industry without compromising functionality
Shanghai, May 18, 2016 - Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, is helping reshape the sustainable future of the Chinese foundry industry through its Low Emission (LE) Technology. GEKO® LE and ECOSIL® LE, a two-tiered bentonite solution for green sand casting, are going to be featured at the Metal + Metallurgy China Exhibition that will take place in Beijing, China on 17 - 20 May 2016. The products are the cornerstones of Clariant's LE Technology that prevents emissions from the outset, supporting a more sustainable casting process and improving total cost of ownership for users.
The casting industry worldwide has grown steadily over the past several years. China is by far the world's largest producer by volume, with 46.2 million metric tons of metal castings produced in 2014, a 3.8% increase compared with the previous year. The total volume produced is more than the next seven top producing countries by volume combined. China's casting industry is projected to continue to grow steadily into the foreseeable future.
"As a result of the 2020 Gothenburg Protocol on emissions, this growing global industry is trending toward more sustainable practices, boosted by a more general global awareness of the importance of reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing," said Francisco Boker, Head of High-growth Markets and Specialty Segments, Clariant Business Unit Functional Minerals.
GEKO® LE and ECOSIL® LE
GEKO® LE and ECOSIL® LE offer their users huge benefits, making these additives popular choices for achieving eco-friendly production excellence in the production of both ferrous and non-ferrous castings, as well as iron ore pellets.
The two-tiered bentonite solution leverages Clariant's LE Technology that prevents harmful BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, xylene) emissions from the outset of the casting process. In contrast, alternative adsorbent approaches capture emissions produced during the green sand process, which are then disposed of as waste in a landfill.
This allows users to reduce harmful BTEX emissions by up to 80% while still producing the highest quality iron castings at optimum productivity with clean casting surfaces and low scrap rates. GEKO® LE and ECOSIL® LE create further value for users by enabling a lower cost of ownership through higher productivity rates, lower additive consumption and less waste. They can also be used without a change to existing casting processes, saving time and money that would otherwise be lost to facilities upgrades and retraining of workers.
"Both products have been through four years of rigorous laboratory and customer testing to ensure optimal sustainability and productivity. Foundries who have switched to LE Technology have not only reduced their environmental impact significantly, but also reduced their total cost of ownership." Boker added.
In addition to their sustainability value, customers who choose to use GEKO® and ECOSIL® products are assured of Clariant's responsible and sustained mining approach, in which Clariant owns its bentonite mines and production facilities to ensure stable supply to its customers worldwide.
EcoTain® Certified
Both GEKO® LE and ECOSIL® LE meet Clariant's stringent EcoTain® criteria for sustainability excellence and superior performance. Products assigned with the flagship EcoTain® label demonstrate outstanding sustainability and performance excellence. The label provides a clear indicator, as well as differentiator to customers of their added value.
Clariant will exhibit at the Metal + Metallurgy China exhibition at booth E1-M16 at the China International Exhibition Center on 17 - 20 May 2016. Clariant teams of technical and commercial experts will stand by at their booth to explain details of their products to visitors during the show. |
