South Korea, 20 October 2015 - DSM Dyneema, the manufacturer of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMwPE) fiber, branded as Dyneema®, and world leader in life protection materials and high performance fibers is highlighting the latest developments in its Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology platform for personal and vehicle protection at Seoul ADEX 2015 (International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition).
Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology is a breakthrough innovation platform from DSM Dyneema, delivering products with a unique combination of exceptional ballistic performance and the lightest weight of any ballistic material currently on the market.
"Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology was developed to answer the growing demands for new material technologies that can deliver truly significant improvements in uncompromising ballistic protection and armor weight reduction in soldier modernization and vehicle armoring programs worldwide, including South Korea," says Nicole Ng, Regional Business Manager, Life Protection at DSM Dyneema.
With the upward defense spending trend across Asia, many countries are looking to upgrade to new technologies - and South Korea is among the leaders in the region. The country is also increasingly becoming a global defense export hub, thanks in part to the growth in size and sophistication of its domestic defense industry, which is on the look-out for more innovative defense technologies including personal protection and armored vehicles.
Enabling the Development of New Generation Body Armor
In line with growing trends in soldier modernisation programs globally, new generation personal armor can now be designed with Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology; eliminating the traditional compromise between higher protection and lower weight.
Products made with Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology are excellent for developing soft and hard ballistic protection applications like vests, inserts and helmets for personal protection. Depending on the threat level, Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology can reduce the weight of body armor by up to
30 percent without sacrificing ballistic protection, while enhancing comfort and agility with fewer layers of material and increased flexibility. Used in helmets, Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology enables designs protecting against 9mm FMJ handgun ammunitions and fragments to weigh as light as about 1 kg.
Enhanced Ballistic Protection at a Lighter Weight for Better Vehicle Operational Performance
Products made with Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology are also used for designing composite armor used in air, land and sea vehicles, enabling the introduction of much lighter and thinner armor concepts with enhanced ballistic protection levels. Depending on the protection level, armor made with Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology offers weight reductions of up to 50% compared to glass and aramid armor concepts, and up to 90% over full steel vehicle armor standalone concepts - without sacrificing ballistic protection. Lighter and thinner armor gives vehicles better operational performance, greater range, agility and lower operation costs thanks to improved fuel efficiency, all at the same level of ballistic protection.
Global Success: Innovating to Protect and Save Lives
Since its introduction, top armor developers around the world, including the Asia Pacific region, have been incorporating Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology into ballistic protection applications for defense programs like Generation II Soldier Plate Carrier System for the U.S. Army and for law enforcement agencies such as the FBI and the New York Police Department in the USA.
Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology has also earned DSM Dyneema multiple global awards for innovation and dedication to improvement in life protection. In November 2014, the company was awarded three ITMA Future Materials awards, including Best Innovation for Industrial Textiles, which were launched by the World Textile Information Network to reward innovation in the technical textiles market. DSM Dyneema was also honored by the Safe American Foundation™ with the 2014 WorldSafe Safety Product Innovation Award for the development of Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology. This award is given to individuals and organizations for their contributions to safety on the global stage.
"Dyneema® has been well-known in South Korea for more than 15 years as the material of choice in many defense programs that call for higher ballistic protection at a lighter weight," says Marcio Manique, Global Segment Director for Life Protection at DSM Dyneema. "With growing demand for more advanced ballistic protection solutions, Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology will further enhance South Korea's defense sector and industry with a new innovative dimension to meet their current and future requirements and set new ballistic protection standards for personal and vehicle armor." |
