Asia will be the major trend for solar PV markets

8/5/2011

In 2010, PV modules manufactured in China amounted to more than 50% of the total global production output, against less than 15% in 2006. Today, out of the ten largest cell manufacturers, six are Chinese and approximately 90% of all cells produced originated in Asia. In terms of worldwide existing wafer production capacities, more than 55% call China their home. Even though as of last year China still had to import more than 50% of the raw silicon in order to meets its domestic demand, over the next 3-5 years, the amount of imported silicon is estimated to decrease to only 20-30%. As a result of the rapid expansion of production capacities along the value chain, Chinese companies have contributed considerably to significant cost reductions of materials, components, and systems, thus enabling the large-scale deployment of PV applications throughout global markets.

But: Asia will be the major trend for solar PV markets

The demand for electricity in emerging solar markets like China, South Korea, India and Southeast-Asian countries will continue to grow and China will account for major investments in these solar PV markets.

The Chinese government is already increasing investments in its solar sector. The various initiatives taken by the government include the enactment of a renewable energy law, the introduction of provincial feed-in-tariffs and the Solar Roof and Golden Sun programs, as well ongoing rural electrification programs. Anticipated future electricity demand, enhanced energy security, lessening its world-leading CO2 emissions, pursuit of a low-carbon-economy, are all among the reasons believed to be driving the central Chinese government's increasing support of the local deployment of PV applications. As a result, last year the domestic Chinese market grew by approximately 300% compared to 2009 and is expected to grow by another 150% in 2011.

A robust domestic PV market is likely to create ample business opportunities, especially for internationally well-experienced PV turnkey project companies.
