Moog Launches Electric Simulation Table with Tilt for Fluid Tank Tests

4/8/2014

Moog Industrial Group has developed an innovative 8 DOF (Degrees of Freedom) Electric Simulation Table, featuring a 2 DOF tilt table for capturing events that require larger angular motions. The patent-pending (WO 2013/178828 A1) system was designed to perform dynamic functional tests on fuel tanks, with the ability to simulate real-world conditions. The behavior of the liquid and components of the tank system can be tested and evaluated in a confidential laboratory setting, as opposed to a test track. In addition, the system can also be used for numerous types of product development tests that may require larger angular motions. This latest technology development has already been adopted by Fiat Group Automobiles.

The Simulation Table with Tilt is a new addition to the already broad range of Moog Simulation Tables. Its innovative design is comprised of a parallel configuration of six electric actuators providing a stiff construction which enables highly accurate control of the motion platform. In addition to the electric actuators of the simulation table, the new tilt table, which is located on top, features two electric actuators for increased pitch and roll motions up to 30 degrees. The total pitch and roll angles of the test system exceed 50 degrees.

Achieving larger combined pitch and roll angles allows manufacturers to avoid the use of a test track when testing their prototypes. Being able to simulate sharp cornering and high accelerations, which are found in real-life motion, increases the quality and speed of testing and saves costs. Furthermore, tests performed in the laboratory enable engineers to set up tests faster. And they can run test programs whenever they need to under repeatable conditions and in a confidential manner.

The test object is mounted on top of the platform. To simulate the movements of the test object, 6 accelerometers are mounted on the motion platform. These are used to determine the movement in 6 degrees of freedom (DOF). The simulated acceleration signals are then compared with the recorded vehicle accelerations. Moog software module, Replication, delivered with the system, helps to determine the drive files to simulate the signals as recorded in real conditions. The software can also be used to play out sine or sinesweep signals to perform resonant-frequency research. The software and test controller simulate the kinematics and use filter settings to divide the motion generation by the motion system and tilt table.

The Electric Simulation Table with Tilt is part of the Simulation Table product range, which also contains various hydraulic solutions for high frequency durability and fatigue testing. Tests that are typically performed with electric simulation tables include: driving simulation, ride and comfort testing, qualitative evaluation of human response, vehicle components, NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness), BSR (Buzz, Squeak and Rattle testing), turret testing, antenna testing and medical research applications.
